1.Many language techniques are used in chapter 5 to make the reader experience was Joe was going through. “I lifted my head from the snow and stared, up across my chest, at a grotesque distortion in the right knee, twisting the leg into a strange zigzag.” This is a quote from Joe right after he injures his knee. These words form an image in the readers head of what his knee looks like, giving an example of imagery in the text.  Joe is facing an intense situation, descending a mountain with Simon with a broken and disorientated leg. Joe doesn’t know what Simon is thinking or feeling or if he will leave him behind. There is no doubt about it that both of them don’t know what to do. “My knee exploded.” another quote from Joe. This is exaggerated and an example of emotive language. It gives the reader a sense that what Joe witnessed his knee doing was horrible and gory. Creating an emotional pity towards Joe. “Pity and something else; a distance given to a wounded animal which could not be helped.” quoting Joe when Simon was staring at him. This is a metaphor, comparing Joe to a helpless wounded animal. This is when the relationship between the two men changes. They both know Joe is injured badly. They have no more gas. They’re on a steep mountain with no help coming. They were friends and now they are strangers. How much they really care about each as friends will be brought to light in their or Simon’s future decisions. Whether is be Simon leaving Joe to save himself, Joe deciding it’s his time to go and let Simon move on, or them both doing what they can to make it both out alive.

  1. Acknowledging Simon’s perspective in the situation is important to understand the underlying change in their relationship. Quote from Joe, “Pity and something else; a distance given to a wounded animal which could not be helped.” This shows the impact Joe’s injury has on their friendship. Simon distances Joe from himself.  It’s important to have Simon’s input on the story because his thoughts show key features when their relationship change. In a way I hoped that he would fall.” Quote from the interview Joe had with Simon. This quote reveals how Simon is detaching himself from Joe. He’s unsure what to do about the situation and unsure about the extent he cares for him. They start to descend the mountain, Simon helping Joe. From Simon’s narration their are details that foreshadow what might happen. “In all the time it had taken me to get up and down he had covered only 100 feet.”  This quote from Simon gives off the vibe of frustration. Simon lowers Joe fast, angering Joe because Simon is hurting him. As they continue to do this, Simon shows little empathy. The strain on their friendship increases as any would in this situation. Simon makes a final decision to help Joe, their routine of belaying gives them a sort of optimism as they block out their emotions.

  1. Greysea, well done for identifying some of the language techniques used in these sections, and for explaining their initial effect on the reader’s understanding (of what is taking place). Structure your answers by beginning with the language technique used, then include relevant examples to support your technique selection. Complete your analysis by specifically explaining what the reader sees, feels, understands from the language technique example.

Well done for making perceptive judgements from specific lines in Joe’s and Simon’s narration: “Creating an emotional pity towards Joe”, “How much they really care about each as friends will be brought to light in their or Simon’s future decisions”, “his thoughts show key features when their relationship change” and “Simon makes a final decision to help Joe, their routine of belaying gives them a sort of optimism as they block out their emotions”.- your insight about the human experiences that are revealed in these lines, is great! Keep presenting your original thoughts through these responses 🙂
